Orion Alumni Further their Career with the Jack Welch Management Institute Online MBA Program

Veterans are increasingly turning to advanced degrees to further their careers, with an estimated 10.4% of male veterans and 11% of female veterans having earned such a degree in 2009, according to the Educational Attainment of Veterans: 2000 to 2009 by the National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics. They go onto conclude that “the percentage of Veterans with an advanced degree was higher than that of non-Veterans each year [from 2000 – 2009] and increased significantly over the decade.” Additionally, Military.com points out that veterans with an MBA in particular demand more salary than their civilian counterparts, an average of $109,720 compared to $92,360.

For this reason, Orion International is proud to help better the career trajectory of our Alumni by introducing them to The Jack Welch Management Institute (JWMI). If you're considering earning an MBA, The Jack Welch Management Institute is the place to learn proven practices from the front-lines of business directly from top CEOs. The Institute offers a high-impact, ACBSP-accredited online MBA degree, as well as Executive Certificate programs, both led by one of the most successful leaders of all time, Jack Welch.

Throughout his career, Jack Welch hired thousands of military officers. He knew their training provided them with the leadership skills to excel in the world of business. Now, Jack has founded an entirely online Executive MBA program to develop a new generation of leaders. Teaching the proven methodologies and immediately actionable practices needed to drive results in any industry, the Jack Welch Management Institute prepares you to translate your skill set from the service into a winning future.

You'll learn how to recruit, hire, and motivate the best people, lead change effectively and authentically, unleash the transformative power of candor and differentiation, create winning strategies and operating plans, make presentations that persuade, and forge a career with a continued upward trajectory. And you'll hear from Jack Welch directly in exclusive video messages on breaking business news. Courses enable you to pursue an advanced degree while continuing to build momentum in your current career or as you complete any service obligations.

According to the JWMI 2013 Career Survey, 97% of the students who responded reported the Jack Welch MBA program has been a valuable investment. 93% reported they are likely to recommend JWMI to others.

"I am a career military officer with a lot of experience leading and managing. Yet, I wanted to learn outside traditional military education programs in order to advance,” explains George Degnon, Brigadier General, Commander, 113th Wing, District of Columbia Air National Guard, “The Jack Welch Management Institute gave me the opportunity to learn organizational dynamics from Jack Welch - one of the business world's legends. The program provides the right combination of learning flexibility needed by working adults and class structure required to succeed. Part of my learning included the discovery of many parallels between business and the military."

Former military service members will be happy to know that they may be able use their GI Bill to fund their MBA at JWMI. And Active Duty Service Members may apply for the JWMI military scholarship, which offers a complete tuition reimbursement opportunity for undergraduates, while graduate students will be responsible for paying a portion of the tuition as an out-of-pocket expense.

From leadership to managerial economics, from finance to strategy, the Jack Welch MBA delivers all the fundamentals.  Click here to visit JWMI online or complete the form to learn more about earning your MBA through the Jack Welch Management Institute. And be sure to check out the video below.

How to Be More Green in the Office

Earth Day was April 22nd, a date to remind ourselves to be more environmentally friendly and conscious of our world and how we use it.

You probably take steps at home to care for the environment, through recycling, turning off lights / air conditioning when you’re not home, limiting the amount of running water you use, etc.

But what about in the office? You spend a considerable amount of time at work, with plenty of opportunities to practice some environmentally friendly actions.

Below are some tips to going “green” in the workplace and creating a more environmentally friendly office space:

Conserve your computer’s energy. If you have a desk job, keeping your computer powered is a must. However, it is estimated that people waste over $1 billion in electricity every year just in computer usage! There are several easy ways you can conserve your computer’s energy. Try switching to energy-saving settings. The Climate Savers Computing Initiative suggests the following:

  • Monitor and display sleep: Turn off after 15 minutes or less
  • Turn off hard drives and hard disk sleep: 15 minutes or less
  • System standby or sleep: After 30 minutes or less

Set your computer to sleep mode when you are away from your computer, and don’t use a screensaver, which uses energy rather than saving it. Turn off your computer whenever you’re not using it for long periods of time, especially when leaving work.

Turn off and unplug all other devices when not in use. Even when your printer, speakers, scanners, etc. are not turned on, they still use power. Be sure to unplug all devices, including power adapters and chargers when not in active use.

Reduce your printer use. The printer is one of the most-used office equipment, so it would be hard to do away with use altogether. You can conserve energy and printer use by not printing in color, using double-sided copying, and recycling ink and toner cartridges.

Reduce your paper waste. Consider whether or not you absolutely need to print off every email or memo, and make a conscious decision to go paperless whenever possible. Keep copies of important emails, files, etc. on your computer, send company updates through email, and review documents online instead of printing them out for edits. You can also arrange for your paycheck to be directly deposited into your account.

Maintain healthy airflow. If you work in an office, chances are you spent a lot of time indoors – a Canadian study found that people spend 83 percent of time at work or school indoors. Keep the air you breathe inside healthy and fresh by using non-toxic cleaning products, opening your windows to increase air flow (or taking outdoor breaks if you don’t have the luxury of a window), and consider using an air purifier.

These are just some ways that you can make an effort to create a healthy and green workspace in your office.

Alumni Update

The Bullseye recently caught up with Joe Shupe, a former MM1(SW) ELT in the Navy and 1LT Signal Corps in the Army, whom Orion matched with a sales career at Nalco, the world's leading water treatment and process improvement company. His job search process began in August 2014 when he contacted Orion in preparation for his February 2015 separation from the Army. His transition continued through October 2014 when he attended an Orion Hiring Conference, which was noted in an article in Middle Market Growth by Judith Nemes titled “Enlisting Veterans to Bolster Employee Forces”.

Joe attended both an Orion Distinguished Candidate Conference in Chicago and a Hiring Conference in San Diego.  In preparation, he was given a checklist of items to complete to prepare himself for each stage of the hiring process. Joe says that the checklists came in very handy. After both conferences, he was invited back to the headquarters of interested employers, where he was given the chance for further interviews and ride-alongs. In her article, Nemes writes that Joe interviewed with seven companies and had been called back by four at the time of publication. She attributes that success to his technical, leadership, and management experience from his time in the military.

In his new position as a District Sales Representative with Nalco, Joe is required to work with large production plants that have many similarities to the propulsion plants that he worked with in the Navy. The leadership experience and presentation skills that Joe gained in the Army will be put to good use, as well.  “I will be making business proposals to key leaders within California's production plants across the Central Valley.  After serving as a junior officer in the Army, I now possess the confidence and ability to make great presentations and leave a good impression on my clients,” explains Joe. He says he is also delighted with the differences that he sees between his civilian and military careers:  “I have much more control over my earnings and my career path now that I am with Nalco.”
Joe has served in the military twice in his lifetime and, therefore, knows what it is like to leave the comfort and security that the military has to offer.  “The first time I served in the Navy, I made the transition by myself.  At the time, I was filled with anxiety and a sense of uncertainty,” recalls Joe, “The second time, I made contact with Orion before I left.  I cannot believe the difference that Orion has made.  My transition was significantly less stressful and much more enjoyable.  Even now, I feel much better knowing that Orion is out there.”
